Windows 8: Read product key from BIOS

by Pramith

If you are looking for the product key for Windows 8, you will no longer find it on a sticker on the device, but will have to read it from the BIOS

How to read out the Windows 8 product key

In the event of a problem, the only option for reinstalling Windows 8 is a recovery installation. However, if you want to reinstall your purchased Windows 8 on the same computer cleanly and without the hardware manufacturer’s promotional software, you need the product key. The same problem also occurs with an installed full version if you have misplaced the DVD case with the necessary number.

  • Since the product key cannot be accessed with on-board tools, use a small free tool such as the Windows 8 Product Key Viewer.
  • Extract the ZIP archive and start “pkeyui.exe”. The virus scanner may classify this application as potentially dangerous. However, you can safely ignore this and run the tool.
  • Without further installation, the program shows the key of the current installation, which incidentally also works in previous versions of Windows XP and higher. Use the single button to copy the determined product key to the clipboard.
