If your DVD drive is not recognised by your Windows PC, this can be due to both the drive and Windows 10 itself. We show you how to make the drive visible and usable again.
Windows PC: DVD drive is not recognised
Take the following steps:
- Press the [Windows] + [R] keys simultaneously so that the “Run” command opens.
- Enter “devmgmt.msc” here and confirm with “OK”. The device manager will then start.
- Click on the category “Action” at the top and select the option “Search for changed hardware”.
- Now open the category “DVD/CD-ROM drives” and select the correct DVD drive.
- Right-click on it and select the option “Update driver software”.
- If the update is not successful, you can alternatively use the options “Uninstall” and then “Install”.
Make DVD drive visible under Windows
Proceed as follows:
- Registry: If the drive is an ATAPI drive and not a SATA drive, start the command prompt as administrator. Then enter the following command, confirm with the Enter key and restart Windows: reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x000001
- Hardware: Restart your computer and then open the BIOS under Windows 10. Check here whether the hard disk is recognised in the BIOS. If this is not the case, unscrew the computer and check the connection between the mainboard and the hard drive. However, be careful and contact a specialist if necessary.
