In contrast to earlier Windows versions, you can burn DVDs and CDs in Windows 10 without additional software. We explain how it works
Burn a DVD or CD under Windows 10 – this is how it works
With Windows 10, you no longer need to use an extra programme to burn DVDs.
- First insert the blank CD or DVD into the drive and close it again.
- Double-click on the drive.
- If you receive an error message, right-click on the drive and select Open AutoPlay…. from the menu. In the new window, click on Burn Files to Disk.
- A dialogue window opens. There you can give the DVD or CD a name and select a variant for the burning process. If in doubt, take the first option and confirm with next.
- To add files to the empty CD or DVD, simply drag it into the window with the mouse. Start the burning process by clicking on “Manage” at the top of the screen and then on “Finish burning”.
- Like a USB memory stick: Save, edit and delete files on the disc at any time. The data carrier can be used on computers and Windows XP or newer operating systems (live file system).
- With a CD/DVD player: Files to be burned in groups and individual files cannot be edited or removed after burning. The disc can also be used on most computers (Mastered).
- In Explorer you can now see that there are no files on the CD or DVD yet. To add files, simply drag and drop them into the window.
- These files will then be burned directly onto the disc. This may take a while depending on the size of the files and the properties of the drive.
- Be sure to wait until the process is complete. If you cancel the process prematurely, the burned disc may not be readable afterwards.
Burning a DVD/CD – more tips
You can also copy or burn a music CD under Windows 10 without additional software.
- Of course, you don’t have to use the Windows 10 burning function. Alternatively, use a burning programme such as CDBurnerXP or BurnAware.
- You can burn an ISO image with the free programme ImgBurn.
- By the way, you can open ISO files directly and do not necessarily have to burn them.
- If you want to burn a video onto a DVD so that it can then be played on a DVD player, you have to take other things into account. We explain the individual steps in a separate practical tip.
- If, on the other hand, you want to burn photos onto a CD, we have summarised all the necessary information for you in another practical tip.
