The specified network name is no longer available: What you can do

by Corinna

There are different reasons for the error code “the specified network name is no longer available”. Try the following solutions

The specified network name is no longer available: Antivirus software

It is possible that your antivirus software on your computer is the cause of the error “The specified network name is no longer available” and is preventing you from accessing shared resources. One possible solution is to temporarily disable your third-party antivirus software, if you have one installed. Here is a guide:

  • Press the Windows key and the X key at the same time to open Task Manager.
  • Switch to the “Processes” tab, find your third-party antivirus software and right-click on it. Then select “End Task”.
  • Finally, check if you still see the error code.
  • If this method was successful, then the problem is probably due to the antivirus software being disabled. In this case, you should uninstall the antivirus software, restart the computer and switch to a different antivirus software.

The specified network name is no longer available: Enable SMB 1.0

You may receive the error code because you are trying to access a device that supports SMB 1.0. However, if your system does not support SMB 1.0, you must first enable it. Here are the instructions:

  • Search for “Windows Feature” in the search box. Then click on “enable Windows features” or “disable”.
  • You must then scroll down to “Support for SMB 1.0/CIFS file sharing”. Next to the function you will find a box. Activate it. To save the changes, confirm with “OK”.
  • Finally, restart your PC to check if the error message has disappeared.
