Restore trash - Practical Tips

Restore trash

by Johannes

It takes just a few clicks to restore items from your trash. You can restore anything from the trash icon on your desktop.

Restore your entire trash folder

Find the trash icon on your desktop. From here, you can restore anything you’ve previously moved to the trash.

  • Click on the Recycle Bin icon on your Windows desktop to open the Recycle Bin. Click on the three dots in the top bar to open the drop-down menu. At the top of the menu, click on “Restore all items”.
  • When you click on this, you will be asked if you really want to restore all items from your Recycle Bin. If you confirm by clicking “Yes”, all items previously moved to the Recycle Bin will be restored.
  • Important: Deleted items in the Recycle Bin are stored by Microsoft for 93 days from the date of deletion. During this time, the files can be restored.

Restore a single item from the Recycle Bin

If you want to restore a file from the recycle bin, it works like this:

  • After you have opened the recycle bin as described in the first point above, locate the item you want to restore.
  • After double-clicking on the desired item, a dialog box opens in which the properties are displayed. Click on the “Restore” button in the bottom right corner. Alternatively, you can right-click on the file and select “Restore”.
  • After you have confirmed by clicking “OK”, you will find the item in the folder in which it was stored before the deletion process.

How to restore the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop

The Recycle Bin icon, like any other icon, can (unfortunately) be quickly deleted from the desktop. If the Recycle Bin has disappeared, you can also undo this with just a few clicks.

  • After right-clicking anywhere on the desktop, an info box will open. Click on “Customize”.
  • Then go to the left side of the new box and click on the “Change desktop icons” button.
  • Now you just have to check the “Recycle Bin” box and confirm the new setting with “OK” or “Apply”. The Recycle Bin is now back on your desktop as an icon.
