The Windows 11 Inplace Upgrade helps to fix system problems. Personal files or installed applications are not affected by the upgrade.
Inplace Upgrade for Windows 11: What’s behind it
The Inplace Upgrade fixes system problems of Windows 11.
- You have the option to repair the system files without losing your files or installed programmes.
- The process replaces all system files, fixing problems caused by corrupted or missing system files.
- Note that repair via Inplace Upgrade is only possible if the version number of the ISO file matches your installed Windows 11 version. Only the first four characters of the version number are relevant. You also need at least Windows 11 from version 20H1.
- If you do not know your version number, press [Windows key] + [R]. In the Run window, type “winver” and press Enter. You will then receive information about your current Windows version.
- Important: It is advisable to make a backup of your data beforehand in case errors occur during the Inplace upgrade.
Perform the inplace upgrade: These are the steps
Once you have backed up your important data, proceed as follows:
- Download the Media Creation Tool for Windows 11. This tool will create an installation media for Windows 11 that you will use for the in-place upgrade.
- Start the Media Creation Tool and accept the licence terms.
- Select “Upgrade”. You will then be guided through the process.
- Important: Make sure you select the “Keep personal files and apps” option when prompted. If you forget to do this, you will lose files and programmes. In this case, you will have to go back to the backup and reinstall programmes.
- After the upgrade is complete, log on to Windows 11. Your system problems should be resolved.
- Tip: If the version number of the ISO file does not match and you are therefore unable to repair it, you can download the appropriate ISO file from the official Microsoft website.
