If you receive a VCF file by email or in any other way, you can open it directly in Windows without having to install an additional program.
How to open a VCF file
A VCF file contains information about one or more people. It serves as a kind of digital business card. The sender can use the VCF file to disclose a wide range of information, including names, email addresses, phone numbers and even profile pictures.
- In Windows, you can usually open the VCF file by double-clicking on it. If this is not the case, right-click on the file and select the Windows Contacts tool under the Open with category.
- If you want to set the tool as default, right-click on a VCF file and select Properties. Click the Modify button on the General tab. Now select Windows Contacts and confirm by clicking Set Default.
- Your iPhone or Android smartphone can also open VCF files. Simply tap the file to view it or to save the contact directly to your address book.
Open VCF files with Outlook or Thunderbird
VCF files can also be opened with mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. This has the advantage that you can add the information contained directly to your contacts.
- Outlook: Go to your contacts. You can do this, for example, by clicking on the contacts icon at the bottom of the left sidebar. Then simply drag the VCF file into the program window.
- Thunderbird: Open the address book via the left sidebar or by pressing the hotkey [Alt] + [2].
- Thunderbird: Open the address book via the left sidebar or with the hotkey [Alt] + [2]. Click on Import in the bottom left corner and then select vcard file. Specify the path to the VCF file and determine which address book you want to use. Confirm by clicking Start Import.
