If there is a problem with the recovery partition in Windows, you can easily delete it with just a few clicks
Windows 10: Delete the recovery partition
If you want to delete the recovery partition, you only need to follow a few steps.
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously to open the “Run” command. Enter “diskmgmt.msc” here and confirm with “OK”. The “Disk Management” will then start.
- Look for the recovery partition and see below on which data carrier it is located. As a rule, this is “Disk 0”.
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys again and enter the command “diskpart”. Confirm again with “OK”. Enter “select disk 0” if you are dealing with disk 0.
- Then enter “list partition” and search for the recovery partition. In our case it is partition 1.
- Now enter the following command: “select partition 1”. If the number differs for you, adjust it in the command. Finally, enter the command: “delete partition override”
- The recovery partition is then removed.
Does it make sense to remove the partition for recovery?
The recovery partition contains the most important files for the Windows system. If Windows can no longer start properly, it tries to repair itself using this partition.
- The recovery partition is between 450 and 499 MB in size, depending on the Windows version, and may therefore take up important and urgently needed disk space.
- If you need more space on your hard disk or if the partition causes problems when managing the hard disk, you can remove the partition without hesitation.
- In order to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, however, you should create a recovery CD.
- This would allow you to return to the initial state if the worst comes to the worst, but you would have to make the free disk space available again.
- Another option for more storage space is an external memory card or if you clean out your documents, pictures and videos or move them to a stick.
