Samsung TV: Half the screen is dark – what you can do

If half the screen on your Samsung TV is dark, it may be a software or hardware problem

Half screen dark on Samsung TV: Software solutions

If one half of your Samsung TV screen suddenly goes dark, it may be a display error. The following methods can help to fix this:

  • It may help to switch off the TV and check the HDMI cable. Remove it and check for any kinks or damage. Alternatively, replace it with a new one
  • Then reconnect it and switch the TV on. The problem may now be fixed. You can also try another HDMI port on the Samsung TV
  • It may help if you press and hold the Home button until the TV automatically performs a soft reset. This usually corrects display errors
  • You can also switch off the TV and disconnect it from the power supply for 30 seconds. This is another soft reset variant.
  • Finally, you can use the built-in image test. You can find this in the settings on the home screen via Support by selecting Device maintenance.
  • Village you will find the self-diagnosis option. Select this and then select the image test to resolve the problem.

It is also possible that your Samsung TV is damaged and for this reason one half of the screen is dark.

  • This is usually a problem with the backlight. If you can still see the picture in the darkened part, a backlight problem can be assumed.
  • In theory, you could replace the backlight yourself or have it repaired. This is no longer really worthwhile, especially with older models.
  • Failed LEDs or OLEDs in the screen due to damage are also possible. Here, too, only a repair can help, but this can be very costly.
