HbbTV – what is it?

What HbbTV is is easy to explain. It is a broadcasting standard that equips the television with additional digital functions.

What is HbbTV?

The HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV) standard is now integrated into all smart TVs. It was launched by the Institute for Broadcasting Technology together with partners.

• With the standard, devices can not only receive the classic television program, but also stream content over the Internet.

• To do this, the respective broadcaster sends a so-called AI table with a URL to your TV. You can then access this with a red button on your remote control. This is why HbbTV is often referred to as “Red Button TV”.

• For example, you can use it to access information about the current program, the TV program or the latest news from around the world.

• HbbTV thus connects your TV program with the Internet features of the latest TV sets.

• It doesn’t matter whether you receive your TV signal via satellite, cable or DVB-T2. HbbTV now works with all common television reception options.

• If your TV does not support the broadcasting standard, you can retrofit HbbTV. To do this, you need a corresponding HbbTV box.
