As always, there are new Christmas films this year too. While there are some comedies, there are also films with a more serious tone
New Christmas movies from 2023
If you’ve already seen enough of the classic Christmas films and are looking for new Christmas stories, you’ll find alternatives this year in cinemas, on TV and on streaming platforms.
- The musical Wonka is in cinemas just in time for Christmas and picks up on the successful story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, this time it’s about the prehistory of chocolate manufacturer Willy Wonka. The star-studded film is a fantasy treat at Christmas time.
- Candy Cane Lane is a Christmas comedy starring Eddie Murphy as Chris. After a failed deal with an elf, everything goes off the rails and Chris and his family have to do damage limitation
- Best. Christmas. Ever. is an American-style romantic comedy. In an attempt to uncover the truth behind the hyped-up Christmas newsletters, two families get into turmoil and, of course, Christmas is at stake.
- The comedy Christmas with you or with me was released in 2022. The sequel follows this year. Once again, two young lovers spend Christmas with each other’s families due to a chain of unfortunate circumstances. There they are confronted with the peculiarities of the families
- Two families are also exchanged in the comedy Family Switch. This time, however, in fantasy style through a body swap. The attempts to reverse the swap provide plenty of laughs. A must-see for fans of Matthias Schweighöfer
- Christmas with a difference may be considered a comedy, but this Norwegian film also tackles serious issues. A young Norwegian woman brings her Indian fiancé to a family Christmas. Intelligent and yet always comedic, two cultures meet here
- The German Christmas film Zwei Weihnachtsmänner sind einer zu viel tells the story of a patchwork family at their first Christmas together. Ex-partners, parents-in-law, big children’s emotions and secrets put the new love relationship and Christmas to the test.
