You can turn off Facebook Messenger if you’re annoyed by the constant messages. Our instructions make it easy for you to do so.

Turn off Facebook Messenger: Mute notifications

To turn off Facebook Messenger, there are a few options depending on whether you just want to temporarily silence it or completely disable it. If you just need a break from the notifications, you can mute them.

  • Open the Messenger app.

  • Tap your profile picture in the top left.

  • Select “Notifications and sounds”.

  • Slide the switch next to “On” to the left.

  • Select the duration for which you want to mute the notifications and confirm with “OK”.

Disable activity status

If you don’t want to appear online, you can turn off your activity status.

  • Open the Messenger app.

  • Tap your profile picture in the top-left corner.

  • Select “Active Status”.

  • Uncheck the option “Display when you’re active until”.

Completely disable Messenger

To completely disable Messenger, you must first deactivate your Facebook account. Note: Messenger can only be completely disabled after the Facebook account has been deactivated.

  • Open the Facebook app.

  • Navigate to “Settings”.

  • Select “Account Ownership and Settings”.

  • Tap “Deactivate or Delete” and select your account.

  • Confirm the deactivation with your password.
