The Steam Deck Desktop Mode allows you to use the mobile games console as a PC. Numerous apps are available for you to use
Steam Deck: Activate Desktop Mode
The Steam Deck is a handy games console and PC in one. Valve offers users the option of switching directly to desktop mode.
- Start the Steam Deck to do this. In the STEAM menu you will find the On/Off menu. Select this menu
- Then search for the option Switch to desktop. The Steam Deck will now immediately switch to desktop mode.
- If you want to deactivate desktop mode, you will find the Return to game mode option directly on the desktop. It is also possible to switch via the system menu by logging out.
- Desktop mode can be used via the trackpad, the console buttons and an integrated on-screen keyboard, which can be called up with [STEAM] and [X]. You can also use peripheral devices such as keyboards and mice. You can expand the range of connected devices via docking stations
- It is also possible to connect TVs and monitors via docking stations with HDMI connections. This allows you to use the Steam Deck as an alternative desktop computer.
Steam Deck Desktop Mode: Applications and possible uses
Using the desktop mode, you can use the Steam Deck almost like a classic PC.
- You can access the app catalog via Discover. There you will find compatible applications that you can then download and install. These include, for example, web browsers, text editing programs or media players.
- The Steam Deck uses the Flatpak technology and also supports the execution of sudo commands. This allows you to install applications or execute scripts independently
- If you are familiar with Linux, you can use this to customize the desktop mode to your liking. Otherwise, the Discover application is all you need to use Desktop Mode extensively.
- You can also use applications from Desktop Mode in normal gaming mode. To do this, use the Add a non-Steam game function and select the desired app. It will then be available in normal mode
- Tip: It is even possible to install Windows on the Steam Deck. The console supports a variety of operating systems.
