Spotify stops playing: what you can do - Practical Tips

Spotify stops playing: what you can do

by Pramith

It could be so relaxing: you are lying comfortably on the couch and listening to your favourite music via Spotify, but suddenly the playback stops. Again and again, for shorter and shorter periods of time. We have summarised for you what you can do about it and what the cause could be.

Spotify stops playback: This could be the reason

If Spotify keeps stopping playback, it’s very annoying. Try to find out if this pausing happens regardless of device or only on certain devices. If playback stops on the Android smartphone as well as on the Windows PC or iOS device, it could be due to Spotify Connect.

  • Spotify Connect allows you to enjoy the streaming service’s content across devices. It may happen that a device keeps trying to pause playback – for whatever reason.
  • In this case, log in to your Spotify account and log out of all devices. Then activate all devices again step by step. Then check whether this has solved the playback problems.
  • If this is not the case, you can activate the background data. To do this, go to the settings of your device and navigate to the “Spotify” app. There you should find something like “Allow background data usage” or “Allow background updates”.

Solve problem if the device is the problem

It may happen that the device being used is the problem. In this case, there are two options: Clear memory or delete app and reinstall.

  • On Android and iOS devices, you should first clear the cache. There are cached files there that can cause the connection problems. To clear the cache, click on the Spotify app and go to Settings, then to Memory, and finally to Clear Cache.
  • If this option does not help, it is advisable to delete the Spotify app from the smartphone and reinstall it completely. In this case, you will also have to register with the streaming service again.
  • If the problem occurs on the PC, you should also delete the local cached data here first. To do this, close the Spotify app and go to the file explorer. There, navigate to the path “C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Spotify”. Replace “user name” here with your Windows user name.
  • You can then go to the “Data” folder, select all entries and delete them. In the last step, open the “Storage” folder to remove the entire folder contents there.
  • Spotify still stops playing randomly? Then you should reinstall Spotify on your computer.
  • If none of the above helps, contact Spotify’s customer service.
