Jabber: Create an account – this is how it works

Jabber is a popular classic among instant messengers, but creating an account is not quite as easy as with the competition.

Create a Jabber account: Choose the right service

Jabber does not directly offer the possibility to create an account. According to the developers, an automatic account creation (by invitation) on the official homepage is planned sometime in 2023. Until that time, you can use other providers to create an account.

• A list of numerous Jabber servers and providers can be found at Jabber.at, for example. Depending on the provider, it is either exclusively a server or a homepage with the option of creating an account directly.
• Since all servers communicate with each other via Jabber or XMPP, you can simply choose one.
• If you prefer a direct account setup, you can use domains like Magic Broccoli XMPP or XMPP.JP.
• You use classic registration forms, which are filled in with the necessary information. Enter the desired username and password for the account creation.
• For confirmation, a captcha code is requested from most providers. After that, the account will be available to you.

Alternative: Create a Jabber account directly in the chat program

Many chat programs offer the option of setting up XMPP accounts directly on the spot and creating new ones in the process. For example, download Pidgin for this purpose.

• After the installation, open the programme. You will be prompted directly by the programme to add an account.

• Click on “Add”. Now you can select the appropriate protocol. For Jabber, you need the protocol XMPP.

• If you already had an account, you could enter the data here now. Instead, enter the data for the account you want to create from scratch.

• In “User” enter your new account name. You also need a domain, for example “jabber.de”. There are numerous domains on the internet that support Jabber and can be found via the server lists already mentioned.

• Now enter a password of your choice. You can also create a local pseudonym depending on the programme. Further options depend on the selected software.

• Before you save the account in Pidgin, select “Create this new account on the server” at the bottom. Click Add to finish.
• The account should now exist on the server as well as in your chat program.
