Ford: Update navigation system – here’s how

by Pramith

You should regularly update the navigation system in your Ford. This is the only way to ensure that you have the latest maps for your car’s navigation system. While map updates for older models are still subject to a fee, newer models can be updated free of charge.

Ford: Navigation system update partly free

Since 2014, Ford has been using the “SYNC” system. This is the operating system in the integrated radio. The navigation system also belongs to this system. Older vehicles developed before 2014 use different systems, usually the “MFD” or “MCA” system.

  • If you have a newer model with “SYNC”, both software and map updates are available directly from Ford at no cost. Instructions are provided in the next paragraph.
  • For older models, you can purchase the updates online. You will then usually receive a CD or an SD card with new map material, as well as instructions. One of these providers is NavigationsSoftwareUpdate.de. In some cases, you will also receive a download file that you can then install via a USB stick. The procedure is then the same as described in the next paragraph for newer models.
  • If you are not sure which system your Ford uses, try the following instructions for SYNC systems first. If your car is not shown as compatible, you should find what you are looking for on the above website.
  • Alternatively, you can also get updates for all systems from your Ford car dealer. However, you will usually have to pay a fee for installation here for both the free and paid updates.

Instructions: Update Ford sat nav

Since 2014, all new models have been using Ford’s SYNC system. Updates for your navigation system have been free since then.

  • First, open the following Ford website and enter the 17-digit vehicle identification number. You can find this number on the inside of the vehicle door or on the registration certificate.
  • The system will then check whether a system or map update is available for your Ford. If so, you can start the download.
  • You now need a USB stick with at least 32 GB of storage space. The USB stick must be completely empty. Delete all data from the USB stick or format the USB stick.
  • Now unzip the downloaded ZIP file by double-clicking and drag the contents of the ZIP file onto the USB stick. The ZIP file usually contains a folder and two files.
  • Start the engine of your Ford, insert the USB stick into the radio and wait a moment. The update starts automatically and takes up to 30 minutes. During the installation, you will be asked several times to turn the ignition off and on again.
