Family Link works with both iPhone and Android devices, but with different functionality.
How Family Link works with iPhone and Android: Using it with Android devices
Google Family Link is a service developed by Google that allows parents to monitor and control their children’s digital activities. The app offers features such as setting screen time limits, approving or blocking apps, and tracking device location.
- Compatibility: Family Link’s compatibility and range of features vary depending on the operating system used. Family Link is designed primarily for comprehensive management of Android devices and offers the widest range of features here.
- Screen time: Monitor and limit the daily usage time of your child’s device. Set individual time limits for individual apps or lock the device at certain times.
- App management: Approve or block the installation of apps from the Google Play Store.
- Location Tracking: Find the approximate location of your child’s Android device.
- Activity Reports: Get detailed insights into your child’s app usage, including the time they spend in each app.
- Internet Safety: Manage your child’s Google Account settings, including web search filters in Chrome.
- Child Device Requirements (Android): For full functionality, the device should be running Android 7.0 (Nougat) or higher. Some features may also be available on devices with Android 5.0 or 6.0.
Using Family Link with iPhones: Features are limited
Parents can also use Family Link on iPhones, but with more limited features compared to Android.
- Google Account management: Manage your child’s Google Account, including account settings and privacy settings.
- Activity monitoring: Monitor your child’s activity on Google apps like YouTube and Google Search.
- Content filter: Enable the SafeSearch filter for Google Search and manage the parental control settings on YouTube.
- No Screen Time or App Management: The Screen Time and App Blocking features available on Android devices are not supported on iPhones and iPads.
- No location tracking: Location tracking of children’s devices is not possible with Family Link on iOS.
- Requirements for children’s devices (iOS): iOS 11 or higher.
- Family Link for parents with iPhones who manage their children’s Android devices: Parents who use an iPhone themselves but want to manage their children’s Android devices can use Family Link to its full potential to use the Android features mentioned above.
