If you want to delete your Instagram account, you can do it directly in the app, on your Android smartphone, your iPhone, on your PC or on your Mac. We explain step-by-step how to delete your account completely and also go into how to deactivate your account temporarily.
Delete your Instagram account in the app – step-by-step
If you have an iOS device, the deletion is done in a few steps using the app. The instructions for Android smartphones can be found in the second chapter. Please note, however, that if you delete your account permanently, all your pictures, likes and follower counts will also be switched off. If you want to keep your pictures, you can download them in advance via Instagram.
- Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile (bottom right). Open the menu via the three horizontal lines (top right) and select Settings.
- In the settings you will find the Account section. Tap on it and then on the item Delete account (at the very bottom). You will now be asked whether you only want to deactivate the account or delete it completely.
- If you are sure, tap Delete account. You will be notified again that you can cancel the deletion within one month.
- Follow this by selecting the Delete your account option.
- Continue deleting your account will redirect you to the Instagram website, where you will now need to enter a reason and your password.
- Clicking on [Delete Username] will deactivate your account for one month and then delete it permanently.

Deactivate your account temporarily instead of deleting it: Here’s how to do it via the app
If you want to deactivate your account for a certain period of time, you can follow these instructions. The advantage of this is that your pictures can no longer be accessed online by other users, but they will not be permanently deleted. Your profile is therefore inactive, but can be reactivated if you change your mind. You can only deactivate your Instagram account via an app on iOS devices. If you use an Android smartphone, read on in the next chapter.
- Open the settings again as described above.
- Navigate to Delete account via the Account item. Up to this point, the steps are the same as for permanently removing your Instagram profile.
- Next, select Deactivate account. You will be redirected back to the website.
- You will also need to enter a reason as well as your password to continue.
- Confirming the Temporarily deactivate account button will hide your photos, comments and “likes” until you log back in.
