If you want to transfer the Microsoft Authenticator app to a new cell phone, you can do this via the cloud backup

Transferring the Microsoft Authenticator app to a new cell phone: Setting up backups

If you are switching to a new smartphone, you can transfer your Microsoft Authenticator account credentials directly. This requires a cloud backup.

  • Important: It is not possible to transfer data from an Android smartphone to an iPhone. If you change the operating system, you must log in again from scratch
  • The cloud backup contains all the necessary login information that is transferred from your old cell phone to the new one. You must activate this beforehand.
  • If you are using an Android smartphone, open the settings of the Authenticator app. Navigate to the Backup item and activate the Cloud backup option using the slider.
  • For iOS devices, you also need an iCloud account for the Microsoft Authenticator cloud backup. The email address used for this serves as the recovery account.
  • You also activate the cloud backup via the Authenticator app settings. There you must select the iCloud backup option
  • The app automatically synchronizes the data in the cloud. You can also use the Backup menu item to check the email used as the restore account.

Transfer and restore the Microsoft Authenticator app to a new mobile phone

Once the backup is complete, you can transfer the Microsoft Authenticator data via the recovery account.

  • Download the Microsoft Authenticator app to your new Android or iOS device. Start the app after installation
  • Do not create a new account. Instead, click Start recovery and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Enter the e-mail address that will serve as your recovery account. Log in using this to start the recovery.
  • You can then use the Microsoft Authenticator as usual. You may have to link certain apps or accounts again.
