Even experienced Monopoly players sometimes play by the wrong rules. In fact, only a few know the exact set of rules. Curious: Some of these errors are so widespread that the game instructions on the last page even explicitly refer to them.
False Monopoly game rules: Anyone can buy a street
Most followers of the popular game Monopoly go by the wrong game rules when buying roads.
- If you think that you can buy a road only if your game piece is on it, you are wrong.
- The instructions say only “one” of the players has to stand on it with his piece. If this player does not want to buy the object, the bank auctions the street. Each player may bid on it.
- By the way, this rule also applies to stations.
Mistake 2: Free parking does not bring money in Monopoly
These game instructions are often misinterpreted.
- The player who arrives on the “free-parking” field collects the penalties of the players from the middle of the field – a common variation.
- This is also wrong: the instructions say that nothing happens if a piece lands on this board.
- However, if a piece lands on the “Income or Additional Tax” square, it raises money for the bank.
Monopoly mistake 3: No zero round at the beginning
The board game starts already in the first round. However, it is often not practiced that way.
- During the first round of the game, no roads and stations may be bought – this assumption is also wrong.
- This zero round is not mentioned in the game instructions of Monopoly.
- The first round of the game is no different from the following rounds.
