If you want to reset your Mac Mini, whether it’s for a resale or a fresh install, there are a few important steps to keep in mind.
Preparation: Reset Mac Mini without data loss
Thorough preparation is essential before you reset your Mac Mini. This is how you back up your important information and avoid data loss.
- Back up your data: Use the built-in Time Machine to create a full backup. To do this, connect an external drive and go to “System Preferences” ☻ “Time Machine”. With just a few clicks, you can back up your system.
- Sign out of iCloud and other accounts: Open “System Preferences” and sign out of iCloud, iMessage and other connected services. This prevents these accounts from still being linked to your Mac Mini after the reset.
- Deauthorize computer (iTunes or Music app): If you are using macOS Catalina or later, this step is not necessary. Otherwise, you can select the “Deauthorize This Computer” option in iTunes under “Account” ☻ “Authorizations”.
- Unpair Bluetooth devices: Go to “Bluetooth” and unpair all devices you want to keep. This will help prevent accidental connections once the Mac Mini has a new owner.
Enter recovery mode and erase the hard drive
Once the preparations are complete, you can start the Mac Mini in recovery mode and reset the hard drive.
- Start Recovery Mode: Restart the Mac Mini and immediately hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys until the Apple logo appears. This opens the recovery mode.
- Use Disk Utility: In recovery mode, select “Disk Utility” and click “Continue”. Here you will see an overview of all disks.
- Delete Macintosh HD: Mark the main hard drive (“Macintosh HD”), click “Delete” and select the format APFS (for newer devices) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for older models.
- Reinstall macOS: After erasing, return to the main menu and select “Reinstall macOS”. Follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the system.
