Using an Xbox 360 controller on a Mac requires a few specific steps because macOS does not natively support this controller.
How to connect an Xbox 360 controller to a Mac: step-by-step installation instructions
To connect the Xbox 360 controller to your Mac, you will need a driver, as macOS does not recognize this controller by default. The open-source driver “360Controller” offers the possibility to use the controller on your Mac.
- Download the driver: Visit the GitHub page of the 360Controller and download the latest version. Make sure to choose a version that is compatible with your macOS version.
- Installing the driver: Open the downloaded.dmg file and follow the installation instructions. During installation, you will need to authorize the driver in the system settings under “Security” and “General”.
- Restart Mac: After successful installation, a restart is required to activate the driver.
Connect your Mac and Xbox controller
After installing the driver, you can connect the controller to your Mac.
- Wired connection: Connect the Xbox 360 controller to an available USB port on your Mac using a USB cable. The driver should automatically recognize the controller.
- Wireless Connection: For wireless use, you need an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. Connect this receiver to a USB port on your Mac. Press the connection button on the receiver and then the connection button on the controller to pair the two devices.
- Not all games on the Mac natively support game controllers. It is therefore advisable to check in advance whether your desired game supports the Xbox 360 controller. If native support is missing and the controller does not work, tools such as “Gamepad Map” can help to make the controller usable for these games.
