How long a MacBook lasts is good to know if you want to buy a laptop. Apple devices are considered to be very durable.
How long a MacBook lasts on average
The MacBook is the laptop from Apple. Whether or not it is worth buying a MacBook depends on the lifespan for many users. However, this varies.
- The average lifespan of a MacBook is 5 to 8 years, depending on the model and how it is used. Apple uses high-quality materials and powerful hardware, but every device eventually reaches its limits.
- The battery of a MacBook loses performance after about 1000 charging cycles. After about 4 to 6 years, it may be necessary to replace it. Other components such as the fan or the SSD often last longer, but can also age.
- Apple provides macOS updates for its devices for about 7 years. After that, the MacBook will no longer receive new features or security updates. Even after the end of official support, the device can often still be used, e.g. with an alternative operating system.
- If you notice that your MacBook is slowing down significantly, security updates are no longer supported, the battery is constantly dying or the trackpad is no longer working, it’s time to upgrade to a newer model.
