What is aluminium made of? Simply explained

by Johannes

What aluminium is made of is often not entirely clear. In fact, aluminium is quite common in nature. The light metal is part of a specific rock, from which aluminium is obtained in a complex process.

What aluminium is made of: Simply put, it is made of alumina

Aluminium is one of the most common metals in the earth’s crust. The light metal is mainly found in one particular rock.

  • The metal aluminium consists of aluminium oxide, which is also called alumina. This in turn is found in the rock bauxite. Aluminium is therefore the metallic element that is extracted from bauxite.
  • Bauxite is considered a natural aluminium raw material, consisting mainly of aluminium hydroxides, iron and titanium oxides.
  • Bauxite is a raw material whose name comes from its place of discovery “Les Baux-de-Provence” in France. The solid rock can also occur as loose soil in some places.
  • Due to its low density, aluminium is particularly popular in industry, for example in car body construction.
