Story of the Krampus: origins of the custom
The story of Krampus first appeared around the end of the 16th century.
- His purpose was and is to parade through the area on December 6 as a companion to St. Nicholas.
- While St. Nicholas gives presents to the good children, the Krampus’s job is to punish the bad children.
- He is supposed to do this with coals or potatoes. Legend has it that the real Krampus even took naughty children with him.
- The story of Krampus was and still is primarily told in the eastern Alps.
- Over time, entire parades and Krampus runs developed, in which not just one Krampus can be seen, but many.
- In other regions, Krampus is also known by a different name, for example as Knecht Ruprecht or as Bartl or Luz. In the Netherlands, he goes by the name “Black Peter”.
- Over the years, the Krampus has gained worldwide fame and numerous films have been made about him.
