New models of the iPad and iPad Pro series appeared in autumn 2022. Compared to their predecessors, the different models received different numbers of innovations that you should know about before making a purchase decision.
10th generation iPad: What’s new
In October 2022, Apple launched the 10th generation iPad. The model has a few new features compared to its predecessors.
- USB-C: The tenth generation iPads are the first to be equipped with a USB-C port. So if you already have other devices with this port, for example an Android smartphone, you can now use one cable for multiple devices.
- Display: With a diameter of 10.9 inches, the screen of the iPad (10th generation) is slightly larger than that of its predecessor (10.2 inches). In addition, Apple now refers to the Liquid Retina Display instead of the Retina Display.
- Resolution: The Liquid Retina Display has a slightly higher resolution (2360 by 1640 pixels) than its predecessor (ninth generation iPad: 2160 by 1620 pixels). However, the pixel density is the same for both generations at 264 ppi each.
- Camera: The resolution of the camera on the back has been increased compared to the predecessor. Instead of 8 MP, the tenth generation iPad has 12 megapixels.
- Chip: While the ninth-generation iPad had the A13 Bionic, Apple uses the A14 Bionic in its successor.
- 5G: With the tenth generation of the iPad, you can now use 5G for surfing. With its predecessor, this was only possible with 4G.
- External keyboard: The iPad (10th generation) is compatible with the Magic Keyboard Folio. Its predecessor, on the other hand, can only be used with Apple’s Smart Keyboard.
- Price: The tenth-generation iPad costs between 579 euros (64 GB storage and WiFi) and 979 euros (with 256 GB storage and in the WiFi + Cellular variant).
12.9″ iPad Pro (6th generation) and 11″ iPad Pro (4th generation)
Also released in October 2022 were the 12.9″ 6th generation iPad Pro and the 11″ 4th generation iPad Pro. The differences to the predecessors here, however, only concern a few areas.
- Chip: While the respective predecessor was equipped with the M1 chip, the successors receive the M2 chip.
- Apple Pencil hover function: The iPad Pro models of 2022 now recognise the Apple Pencil even when it is not touching the touchscreen, but is still a few millimetres above it.
- ProRes and ProRes RAW: The two iPad Pro variants from 2022 can record videos in ProRes and ProRes RAW. However, this is not yet possible with Apple’s own camera app (as of November 2022, iPadOS 16.1). For this, you have to download another app that has this option.
- Differences 11″ vs. 12.9″: The two iPad Pro variants differ from each other primarily in terms of dimensions, battery capacity (11″: 28.65 watt hours; 12.9″: 40.88 watt hours) and display resolution (11″: Liquid Retina with 2388 by 1668 pixels; 12.9″: Liquid Retina XDR with 2732 by 2048 pixels).
- Price 11″ variant: For the smaller iPad Pro you pay between €1049 (128 GB storage and WiFi) and €2629 (2 TB storage and WiFi + Cellular).
- Price 12.9″ variant: For the larger of the two 2022 iPad Pro models, you’ll pay between €1,449 (128 GB storage and WiFi) and €3,024 (2 TB storage and WiFi + Cellular).
