Renewing the DHCP lease on your iPhone or iPad can help solve network problems. We show you what’s behind it and how it works
Renew DHCP lease on iPhone/iPad: What’s the point?
To get on the internet at home, you need to connect to your router. Whether it’s a PC, laptop, iPhone or iPad, each device gets its own IP address from the router.
- By renewing the DHCP lease, this IP address is reset and the device receives a new IP. Usually the router does this several times a day on its own.
- If there are connection problems, however, it can help to renew the DHCP lease manually. Especially in large public networks, it can happen that two devices receive the same IP address, causing problems. Between your own four walls, this happens rather rarely.
- Therefore, you should only renew the DHCP lease if there is a real prospect of success. Some routers for domestic use also simply return the same IP address when renewal is requested. However, the iPhone expects a new IP address, so this only causes more problems.

- Select your current network connection and tap the “Renew Lease” button under “DHCP”.
- Tip:If the problem persists, restart both the Apple device and the router.
