No sound on iPhone – possible causes

by Pramith

If your iPhone no longer emits any sound so that you can no longer listen to music, for example, there are various possible causes

No sound and no music on the iPhone: isolating the problem

iOS distinguishes between “normal” audio playback and sounds. Therefore, first check whether the problems can be narrowed down by this:

  • Open the “Music” app on your iPhone and start playback of any song. Slide the volume control all the way to the right until the full volume is reached
  • If you can hear the music but your iPhone remains silent when you make a call, this is an indication of incorrect sound settings. Stop the music and go back to the Home screen
  • Now open the “Settings” and select the “Sounds” menu item. You will see the “Ring and notification tones” option roughly in the middle. If you move the slider all the way to the right, all tones are played back audibly

Is the telephone muted?

Check whether your iPhone is set to “mute” using the switch on the left edge of the iPhone.

  • This applies if the switch is highlighted in orange
  • Use the “+” and “-” buttons to change the volume.
