iPhone earpiece quiet: Causes & solutions

by Johannes

If your iPhone earpiece is very quiet when making a call, this can have various causes. We show you the possible reasons why you have to listen so hard and also provide the solutions for the problem.

iPhone earpiece quiet: Possible causes and solutions

If the iPhone is very quiet, making a call is unnecessarily stressful. So you should start looking for the cause.

  • Sometimes the solution is as banal as the problem itself. Maybe you accidentally turned the volume down. So press the volume up button on your iPhone while you’re on the phone.
  • If a display film is not applied accurately, the volume on the handset may be affected. A cover can also interfere if it does not fit. If either of the two interferences is present, remove the cover or foil and the problem should be solved.
  • If you often carry your iPhone in your pocket, dust and other debris can get trapped in the speakers and degrade the sound. In another practical tip, we show you how to clean mobile phone speakers and what you should bear in mind.
  • As is the case with technology, it is not always possible to find the reason for a problem. Sometimes a simple restart helps and the iPhone works perfectly again.

Ruling out network problems and defects on the iPhone

The iPhone itself does not always have to be responsible for a quiet sound when making a call. However, it may also be that there is actually a defect.

  • If the sound is not permanently quiet when you make a call and does not improve when you switch on the hands-free system, there may be network problems. In this case, the volume and sound quality fluctuate during the call.
  • What tricks help when your iPhone has no reception, we reveal in another article.
  • If there is a defect in the earpiece, you can easily check. Record a short voice memo via the Voice Memo app. Play the message, but not through the loudspeaker, but through the earpiece.
  • If you hear everything at a normal volume, network problems were probably responsible for the quiet sound when you make a call. If you have to listen intently when listening to the memo, a defect in the earpiece is more likely to be the cause of the quiet sound. If so, your iPhone needs to be repaired.
  • In the interim period until the repair, you can use a headset to make phone calls. This way you can understand the person you are talking to again without any problems.
