If the camera on your iPhone remains black and no longer works, you can usually fix this yourself. A software update may already be available for this problem. We show you how to solve the problem.
Camera from iPhone/iPad remains black – what you can do
You can try the following tips to get the camera from your iPhone or iPad working again:
- Simply restarting your iPhone or iPad should fix the problem in the vast majority of cases.
- Also take a look at the camera. It may be covered or soiled by paper or the like.
-
Try whether the camera works in other apps. If it does, there is no defect in the hardware. If the camera only does not work in some third-party apps, you should check the permissions in the settings. The app may not have access to the camera at all.
- Instead, you should check whether there is a software update for your iPhone or iPad. Sometimes updates are enough to fix minor bugs.
-
If this does not solve the problem, you should perform a hard reset on the iPhone. This will restore all settings to their factory defaults. Be sure to create a backup beforehand so that no data can be lost.
Further solutions in case of hardware failure
If the hard reset was unsuccessful, there may be a defect in the camera
- You will have to have the camera replaced in such a case
- If you still have warranty on your device, you should claim this with Apple
- If your device is already out of warranty, you will have to pay for the repair yourself.
