iPhone 12 eSIM: Which one works and how to go about it

by Pramith

The iPhone 12 is equipped with an eSIM. This allows you to use two different phone numbers in the Apple smartphone at the same time. In this practical tip, we explain what you need to pay attention to with the eSIM and exactly how to set it up.

iPhone 12 with eSIM: What you need to bear in mind

You can use an eSIM with the iPhone 12 in addition to a physical SIM card. Unlike the classic SIM card, this no longer has to be inserted into the device, but is already permanently installed there.

  • Your mobile phone provider must, however, support the eSIM. While it was initially only possible to take out tariffs with eSIM with Vodafone and Telekom, these are now also available with O2 and Blau. The Drillisch Group with brands such as simplytel also offers eSIM tariffs.
  • It is not yet possible to take out tariffs with eSIM support with other providers.
  • Note that 5G is not supported when using dual-SIM. However, since the 5G network is not yet widely rolled out in Germany, this should bother very few users. Apple has also announced that it will lift this restriction in 2021 with a software update.

Using the iPhone 12 with eSIM – here’s how

You can set up the eSIM either by QR code or manually by entering the data

  • You will receive the QR code either by post or by e-mail.
  • To scan it on your iPhone, open the settings and select “Mobile network”.
  • Here you can manage your different phone numbers. Select “Add mobile network” to set up the eSIM. Now you can scan the QR code or enter the data manually.
