Face ID no longer works – what you can do

by Pramith

If Face ID no longer works on your iPhone or iPad, this can have various causes. We show you tips on how you can get Face ID working again on your own.

Face ID no longer works: This could be the reason

It is best to go through the following points in order. This way, you can gradually rule out various causes for Face ID no longer working.

  • Keep the camera clear: First of all, make sure that nothing is covering the special “TrueDepth camera” of your device. Also make sure that no dirt or the like interferes with the camera function
  • Do not cover your face: Make sure your face is not covered. Note: Some sunglasses block the infrared waves that help the camera clearly recognise your face
  • The right position: Use your iPhone in portrait mode so that Face ID can easily capture your face. Also make sure that the distance between the camera and your face is between 25 and 50 cm. This distance is equivalent to an arm’s length.
  • If you want to use Face ID on your iPad, you can use it in portrait or landscape mode. Again, the distance between the device and your face should not be more than an arm’s length.
  • Perform iOS updates: Check whether updates for the iOS operating system are available on your iPhone or iPad. If so, update the operating system to the latest iOS version
  • Check settings: Go to the “Face ID & Code” subcategory under “Settings” on your device. Check whether Face ID is activated for your desired functions. Adjust the settings if necessary.

Configure an “alternative appearance” – here’s how

If you have changed your appearance significantly, Face ID may not be able to recognise your face. In this case, create an alternate appearance

  • Under “Settings”, tap the “Face ID & Code” submenu.
  • Scroll down on your screen and press “configure alternative appearance”.
  • Face the camera head-on so that your face fills the screen.
  • Move your head slowly in a circle as described on the screen.
  • Then press “Next” and take your iPhone or iPad in the other hand.
  • Move your head in a circle again as instructed.
  • Finally tap “Done”.

If nothing works anymore: Reset Face ID

Reset Face ID if the feature still does not work despite the tips described above. You can then reconfigure Face ID

  • Go to the “Face ID & Code” sub-item in the “Settings” menu. Scroll down a little on your screen and select “Reset Face ID”.
  • Then press “Configure Face ID” to turn the feature back on and customise it.
  • Important: If Face ID still does not work after resetting, the TrueDepth camera may be damaged. In this case, contact (Apple Support) and, if necessary, return your device for repair.
