As of iOS 8, you have to close active apps on your iPhone and iPad separately so that they do not continue to run in the background. We show you how to do this.
iPhone/iPad: close all apps completely
If you close the current app with a click on the home button, it will remain active in the background and drain your battery. However, you can close apps completely via the iOS task manager:
- Swipe up the preview of an app to close it completely. We show you how to close all apps at once in this practical tip.
- Newer iPhone/iPad models no longer have home buttons due to their modern design. You can open the task manager by dragging your finger from the bottom of the screen to the top and releasing it.
- Tip: Repeat this process at regular intervals. This will ensure that no unwanted apps are running in the background.
This is why you should not close apps on your iPhone/iPad
- By constantly quitting apps, you are hurting battery life. The app then has to be completely reloaded with every new application. This takes a long time and requires more energy.
- You can’t compare the way iOS works with a PC, where many programmes run at the same time and take up energies.
- Apple and Google rely on a special mechanism: only the app that is currently running in the foreground uses the resources of the device.
- The apps in the background are “frozen”, so to speak, by the operating system after a few minutes.
