On WhatsApp, two gray check marks have a very specific meaning. They tell you whether your message has already been received by the recipient
What the two gray check marks mean on WhatsApp
By looking at the checkmarks behind a WhatsApp message, you can tell what its status is. There are three different options of which icons you can see, including two gray checkmarks.
- If there is only one check mark behind your WhatsApp message, it means that your message has been sent and also transmitted to the WhatsApp server, but has not yet reached the recipient.
- Two gray check marks mean your message has been delivered. This means that the phone or other associated device has received the text or image, but the message has not yet been read.
- Once the other person has read your message, the two gray check marks turn blue. Unless the recipient has disabled the read receipt on WhatsApp. In this case, the two check marks will remain gray even if the message has been read.
- If your chat partner has read your message in the smartphone preview and has not opened WhatsApp for it, you will also only see two gray check marks.
- Good to know: In a WhatsApp group, the two gray check marks will not appear until everyone has received the text and will remain gray until all group members have read the message.
