WhatsApp QR code: Here’s what it can do and how to use it
Every user and every user has a personal QR code on WhatsApp. This allows you to quickly open a chat to another person without first having to save the name and number in the contacts.
- You can find your own QR code by going to “Settings” and then pressing the QR code icon next to your name. The code can be easily scanned by others who are with you with your cell phone and have your WhatsApp contact directly.
- You can also send your QR code by tapping the share icon at the top right of the page with the code. Now you have the option to send it via a wide variety of apps. However, make sure to send your WhatsApp code only to people you trust, because if they share the code, anyone can write to you.
- To add a new contact via their QR code, first go to the new chat icon. On Android, the icon is in the bottom right corner and looks like a square speech bubble with two dashes in it. On iPhone, the icon is in the upper right corner and looks like a pencil in a square. Then press “New contact” and then “Add with QR code” (iPhone), or tap the QR code icon after “New contact” (Android).
- In both operating systems, there is also the option to use the camera to add contacts via WhatsApp code. On Android, you can find the camera icon in WhatsApp at the very top of the home screen, and on iOS, it’s in second place at the top right. Then hold your phone camera over the QR code of your new contact and press “Add” (Android) or “Add to Contacts” (iOS).
Create a QR code for a group
You can also create a code to invite others to a group.
- To create a QR code for a group, open the corresponding group and press the name of the group at the top of the chat to open the “Group Info”.
- Go to “Invite to the group with link” and generate the QR code there. One requirement is that you are an admin of the group.
- You can then share/send the group QR code as well or show it directly to people who are with you. Again, be sure to only share the code with people you trust.
