Have you ever been called a Grinch and wondered what it means? Probably you have made it clear before that you don’t fancy Christmas and this fact has earned you a nice insult.
Grinch: This is what the term means – and this “person” is behind it
“Hey, now, don’t be such a Grinch!” If you don’t know what is meant by this phrase, you are not alone. The phrase “Grinch” has gained a lot of popularity in the vernacular and has taken on a meaning all its own.
- The Grinch is the main character of the 2008 film of the same name starring Jim Carrey. He is a green fantasy creature who hates Christmas and plans to ruin it.
- The successful film was followed by an animated remake in 2018, as well as numerous memes and merchandise related to the Grinch. “To be a Grinch” or “to go all Grinch” then evolved into a figure of speech.
- The meaning is that someone spreads a bad mood because they are not in the Christmas spirit. Thus, such a “Grinch” also spoils other people’s enjoyment of the festive season.
- Even independent of the Christmas season, the term “Grinch” is used to refer to a grumpy or pessimistic person. It is meant in a slightly pejorative way, but is a nice insult rather than a nasty one.
