E-bikes have many advantages – but their weight is not necessarily one of them. The battery, motor and sturdy frame make some e-bikes real heavyweights. In this article we explain approximately what weight you should expect.
E-bike – the weight you should expect for the bike
E-bikes are practical and convenient because they come with a motor and a battery. By their very nature, many e-bikes are therefore quite a bit heavier than conventional bikes, although there is of course a wide range of weights there too.
- As a guideline, the electrical components of an e-bike weigh approximately between seven and ten kilograms.
- When you buy an e-bike, you usually want the highest possible range. However, the further you can ride on one battery charge, the heavier the battery and thus the e-bike.
- Most e-bikes are not considered racing bikes, but rather cargo bikes, so the bike frame is built accordingly sturdy. This also adds a kilo or two.
- The weight of most e-bikes ranges between 21 and 30 kilograms in a frame. However, there are also lightweights among the bikes.
- One of these particularly light e-bikes has made it into the Guinness Book of Records with its low weight. The e-bike was developed by a Swiss. The electrical engineer Jean-Pierre Schiltknecht succeeded in constructing an e-bike that weighs less than eight kilograms. His e-bike, which Schiltknecht named Volta Montanara, weighs exactly 7.66 kilograms.
- Note: Many manufacturers indicate the model with the lightest battery when stating the weight. If the weight of the e-bike is very important to you, you should take this into account when comparing the different models with each other.
