The YouTube app offers a feature that allows you to have some comments under the videos translated. No additional apps or programmes are needed, but the translation does not work for every comment.
Translate YouTube comments in the YouTube app
Because YouTube is a worldwide video platform, there are often comments in different languages under the videos. So that you can understand the comments from people all over the world and take part in discussions and conversations about the videos, you can have some comments translated directly. However, this is only possible in the YouTube app and not in the browser.
- Open your YouTube app and select a video from which you want to have the comments translated.
- Scroll down a bit and tap the two arrows pointing up and down under the video in the “Comments” field.
- The comments section will now open. Under some foreign language comments you will see the writing “Translate into: German”.
- You can tap this text directly and the comment will be translated automatically by Google Translator in your YouTube app. Now it says “View original (translated by Google) “under the comment.
- Tap on this text and the comment will be displayed again in its original form without the translation.
- Because YouTube is owned by Google, no translation will be suggested for languages you have specified in your language settings in your Google Account, as Google assumes that you understand the languages specified.
- You can find out which languages you have entered not in the YouTube app, but in your Google Account under “Personal data” and “Languages”.
- Make sure that you have deactivated the slider for “Add languages automatically”. Otherwise, Google will often automatically assume that you understand English if you visit English-language websites from time to time.
- Unfortunately, the comments cannot be translated collectively. This means that you have to select each comment you want to have translated once.
