If you want to expand your home LAN or WLAN network, you can do so with a TP-Link AV500. We will show you how to set up the device step by step in this practical tip.
TP-Link AV500: The basic set-up
Note: There are different models of the TP-Link AV500. There is always a base adapter (powerline adapter) and one or two additional forwarding adapters (powerline extenders). These have one or two LAN connections and usually also a WLAN module.
- First take the basic adapter (powerline adapter). Plug it directly into a socket near your router without an extension.
- Connect the router to the powerline adapter using the LAN cable supplied. The powerline adapter now receives the Internet signal from the router and forwards it via your mains supply.
- Now take one of the powerline extenders and plug it into another socket of your choice, for example in another room.
- The basic function of the TP Link AV500 is now already set up. You can now forward the Internet signal from the powerline extender to a computer via LAN cable.
- Tip: In the best case, plug the adapters directly into the socket and avoid using power strips. The speed can be reduced by a power strip. If you don’t have a free socket and basically have no problems with your internet speed, you will usually not notice the difference.
TP-Link AV500 set up: WLAN via Powerline
The LAN connection is now established. If you want to expand your WLAN network via the TP-Link AV500, you have to set up this function manually. The easiest way to do this is via WPS. To do this, you should temporarily connect the powerline extender to a power socket within range of your router.
- Modern routers have a WPS button on the top. Press and hold the WPS button for about 3 seconds until a light also flashes or lights up. Now you have two minutes to do the same with the powerline extender.
- The router and the powerline extender then communicate with each other via radio and synchronise the data for the home WLAN network. The powerline extender restarts and can then be placed in the desired room again. The device receives the Internet signal via the socket and amplifies your WLAN from there.
- If your router does not have a WPS button or if you want to make further settings, continue reading in the next paragraph.
Setting up the AV500 manually on the computer
Manually set up also works on PC.
- Connect the powerline extender to a computer via LAN cable and plug the unit into a wall socket
- If you now insert the CD supplied into the computer, you will be guided through the set-up step by step.
- If you want to configure the Powerline Extender in another way, open the website tplinkplclogin.net. For the login, use “admin” as the user name and password.
