The best key hiding places have to be found first – especially by a thief. We have summarised where to keep your keys safely for you in this article
Hiding keys on a garage door
If you have a garage door, it’s a good place to stick a magnet.
- If you have a garage door, it’s best to stick the magnet in the joint of the door at the top.
-
You only need to put the key on – it will hold by itself.
- If your key is made of stainless steel, you can also use outdoor plasticine to press the key into. Make sure that the plasticine is roughly the same colour as your garage door.

In rented flats, the neighbours are of course the best people to take care of your keys – if they are trustworthy.
- If you are new to the flat, however, a doormat is the usual hiding place. Everyone knows this and any thief will look underneath.
- Take a carpet knife and cut the mat open slightly at the side. One key width should be enough. Then slide the key in and tape the cut with double-sided tape.
- Make it look like a defect. No thief puts himself at risk of being caught already at the doormat.
Living in an apartment building: Another key hiding place
Buy a dummy fire alarm.
Stick the dummy in the back corner of your outer hallway. This way, the fire alarm will not be associated with your key.
Attach – again with a small magnet – the key inside to the metal casing on the outside of the frame.
This way, your key won’t be seen right away, but you’ll know where it is in case of an emergency.Security for your home thanks to decoration in the hallway
In apartment buildings there really are numerous hiding places for your key:
- Take a small plastic box and feel it with soil. On top of the soil, put a few small decorative flowers made of silk that look relatively natural.
- Bury the key in the soil.
- Place the box in a non-intrusive place in the hallway, hallway window or even in the basement area. Again, fix it well with double-sided tape.
Keys in the front garden
Keys can also be hidden outside.
- Take an old can that is rotten on the outside and place it in front of your house as if carelessly discarded. It may well lie somewhat hidden.
- Before you do this, clean the inside of the good piece and put an older piece of fabric inside. It is best to take a green colour, this represents a mouldy content.
- Wrap the key in the cloth and put it in the tin. The green cloth should be easily visible. Green paint and older tins do not augur well or valuably for people – not even for a thief.
