- Smol is nothing more than a variation on “small”, which means small in German. The term originated in the DoggoLingo online language and means something like small and sweet. It belittles all kinds of names and is particularly popular in memes about dogs.
- These days, the term is so popular that Buzzfeed even used it in a headline to an article about cute baby animals in 2015.
- Smol also occurs in combination with the term “smol bean”. The latter refers to all animals or things as sweet and belittles them. Twenty One Pilots singer Tyler Joseph increased the popularity of the term when he once posted “I’m a bean” on Twitter. Fans then referred to him as a “smol bean”.
