Side Eyeing Chloe: The story behind the meme explained simply

by Mike

The Side Eyeing Chloe meme went viral in 2013 and is a Photoshop and Reaction meme that is popular for confusing behaviour.

How the Side Eyeing Chloe meme was created

The backstory of the Side Eyeing Chloe meme is quickly told and captured on YouTube, because that’s where a father posted the video of a seemingly everyday morning on 12 September 2013. The parents are in the car with their two daughters, Lily and Chloe, taking Lily to school. As the father drives past the school, Lily is happy. Now the parents reveal that they are going to Disneyland and Lily bursts into tears and is beside herself with joy. This is followed by the confused and worried expression on the face of Chloe, a little blonde girl with big eyes. The video is also auspiciously titled “Lily’s Disneyland Surprise… AGAIN!”

  • Through Tumblr, the meme was then shared on 18 September 2013 as a set of four animated gifs summarising the video.
  • A few days later, on 24 September, posts appeared on BuzzFeed.
  • In the aftermath, Chloe’s face was Photoshopped into photos of stars like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, and even Google saw the potential and used the image as an advertisement in Sao Paulo.
  • Countless Photoshop treatments of Chloe’s face followed in artworks such as the Mona Lisa, as emoji and as reaction.
  • As a Reaction meme, Side Eyeing Chloe (or sometimes Side Eye Chloe) represents behaviour that is very confusing and so a meme also appeared with the caption “could you fucking not”, which means “could you the hell not”.

This is what Side Eye Chloe is doing today

Today Chloe is older and has quite a few recent photos and old photos on her Instagram page. She has 522k followers there (as of February 2022).

  • She is a public figure and regularly shares glimpses of her everyday life.
  • It is worth noting that many reactions to Chloe come from Brazil, which may be related to Google’s advertising campaign.
