Resetting Firefox settings – this is how it works

by Pramith

You can completely reset all Firefox settings such as the homepage without losing your passwords, bookmarks, cookies or history.

Reset Firefox settings completely via the support homepage: Use the cleanup function

Firefox offers you a support homepage that has a variety of functions for optimizing the browser. You can use these to reset the settings completely.

  • Open a new tab in Firefox, for example with the key combination [Ctrl] + [T]. Enter the term about:support in the address bar and confirm with [Enter].
  • To reset the settings, for example for adware and deeper changes, use the browser’s cleanup function. This resets Firefox to the factory settings without deleting important data such as saved passwords or your cookies.
  • Navigate to the Refloat Firefox option. Click on the Clean up Firefox button below it.
  • Confirm the following query by clicking Clean Firefox again. The process begins and then you only need to restart the browser so that Firefox can synchronize the saved data again.

Resetting settings of older Firefox versions: Instructions

It is also possible to reset older Firefox versions before number 38 if you are still using them. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Click on the Help tab in the browser menu bar and then on Troubleshooting information. You may need to make this tab visible first by clicking on the orange Firefox button.
  • In Firefox versions 29 and higher, you can find the help menu by clicking on the three horizontal settings bars at the top right. The help menu is hidden behind the question mark
  • Now a support website appears with a gray box in the right-hand corner. Here you will already find the Reset Firefox button. Click on it with your mouse.
  • You must confirm the factory reset once again to start the process. The reset then usually takes several minutes.
  • Firefox is then restarted and begins to import the previously saved data. You can then use the browser normally again.
