PS5: Wi-Fi problems? This is what you can do about it

by Michaela

If you experience Wi-Fi problems with the PS5, it is often due to your router and sometimes even to Sony itself. However, in many cases, the problem can be solved in a few steps so that the console’s Wi-Fi works again.

How to solve Wi-Fi problems on the PS5

On the PS5, as with other devices, internet connection problems can occur from time to time. To get the Wi-Fi working properly again and to be able to play online or download games, go through the following steps.

  • First of all, restart the PlayStation 5. To do this, press the black PS button on the controller and then select “Restart PS5” in the menu.

  • If the problems persist, restart your router. To do this, unplug the router and wait about 15 seconds before reconnecting it to the power supply. It will then take about 5 minutes for the internet connection to be restored.

  • Check whether you have the same problem on other devices such as your smartphone. If so, contact your Internet service provider to resolve the problem.

  • If the problem only occurs on the PlayStation, check if Sony is experiencing a fault or maintenance. If so, you can only wait for Sony to release the servers again. Information about error messages can be found, for example, on the PSN Twitter account.

Connect PS5 to 5GHz with the router

If the console connected to the internet automatically when you first set it up, it will have connected via the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Try switching to 5 GHz to see if Wi-Fi works.

  • Open the settings from the PS5 home screen by clicking the cogwheel symbol.

  • Then go to “Network” and select “Set Up Internet Connection”.

  • Now press the Option key and select “Wi-Fi Frequency Bands”.

  • Here, switch from “Automatic” to “5 GHz”. If that doesn’t work, try 2.4 GHz instead of “Automatic”.
