Pizzagate was one of the conspiracy theories in the 2016 US presidential campaign that was a concern to presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and was exploited by her political opponents.
Pizzagate: a conspiracy theory in the election campaign
In order to weaken the political opponent, people often spread absurd theories. One of them is the so-called Pizzagate.
- The content of Pizzagate is the claim that Hillary Clinton, who was the Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, would be at the centre of an international paedophile network with satanic practices. This would operate worldwide to abduct, sell and abuse children. What does a pizza have to do with it? The basement of the “Comet Ping Pong” pizzeria in Washington D.C. is said to have been used as the headquarters.
- This theory seemed so real to some people that in December 2016, a man even stormed into the pizzeria in Washington D.C. armed and shot around.
- By the way, other celebrities are theorised to be part of the paedophile network, including singer Lady Gaga and former President Barack Obama.
- Pizzagate originated in emails from Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta published by Wikileaks. In them, friends of conspiracy theories believed they had deciphered codes that pointed to a paedophile ring.
- On the internet, this lie went viral, especially on Reddit and 4chan. But Trump supporters also started a wildfire with more lies.
- In fact, there is no evidence to support this theory. The conspiracy theory could even have any wind taken out of its sails.
- However, to this day, there are people who believe it is true, and spread their beliefs on social media.
