The online portal OnlyFans is conquering the net: What it is exactly and how it works? We explain. In addition: Which company is behind it, which revenues from OnlyFans subscriptions actually go to whom, how the whole thing is paid for and how legal the platform is?
OnlyFans is a platform for nude content.
Some people will have heard or read about OnlyFans and wonder what is behind it. We give you an overview of what the portal is predominantly used for. In a nutshell: What is forbidden on Instagram and Co. is the principle here: and uncensored eroticism and pornography.
- OnlyFans is a content-sharing platform. The platform itself and the content creators earn money from the content they post.
- If you find a user profile exciting, you can pay varying monthly amounts, which then give you varying amounts of access to that person’s content.
- Basically, you will find different content creators with different content on OnlyFans. This ranges from profiles of artists and musicians to crowdfunding projects to erotic and pornographic content. Statistically, however, erotic content predominates.
Who is behind OnlyFans? Tim Stokely
Here’s what company or man is behind the online platform.
- The founder and CEO of OnlyFans are Tim Stokely.
- The operating company of OnlyFans is called Fenix International Limited and is based in London. In 2018, Leonid Radvinsky (owner of MyFreeCams) became a director of Fenix International Limited after acquiring 75 percent of the company.
- Neither the founder of OnlyFans nor the operating company is known too much.
- In 2020, OnlyFans was estimated to be worth approximately $810,000,000 to $936,000,000.
- Even by 2020, the site said it had about 24 million registered users, and CEO Stokely said about 200,000 new users reportedly signed up every 24 hours.
Who gets the revenue and how is it paid?
Let’s take a look at how much money from the subscriptions goes to the original creator and how much goes to OnlyFans itself. Plus: how the payment works.
- When you take out a subscription with a content creator on OnlyFans, a good 20 percent of the money goes to the OnlyFans site itself
- The remaining 80 percent goes to the content creator.
- Payment is made by credit card or Giropay. Paysafecard and Sofortüberweisungen also work.
- Payment via Paypal is excluded as Paypal has stated in their usage policy that they do not support “certain sexually oriented materials or services”.
- The amounts the Creator earns from subscriptions vary widely. The exception to the top: rapper Bhad Bhabie reportedly earned a million dollars within the first 6 hours.
On the legality of OnlyFans
Is the use of the site completely legal? For those 18 and over, yes.
- OnlyFans may be used from the age of 18. This age limit applies to both fans and creators.
- Creators must verify their age before uploading content, however, according to the BBC, this check is sometimes poor. For fans, there is no age check to ensure that only adults can consume the shared content.
- This lack of age verification creates a risk for both platform and creator that younger viewers will also consume the content, thus violating Section 5 of the Interstate Treaty on the Protection of Minors in the Media. Both platform and creator can be prosecuted as a consequence.
- The uploading of punishable acts is of course also prohibited here. This includes, for example, child pornography and other types of illegal pornography.
