Nintendo Switch: Setting up and using YouTube – here’s how

by Mike

Use YouTube on the Nintendo Switch directly via the app from the eShop. Installation and setup is the same as for other applications.

Setting up YouTube on the Nintendo Switch: Instructions

You can install and then use YouTube on your Nintendo Switch console without any additional software.

  • You can find the app for free in the Nintendo eShop by entering the search term YouTube. To do this, open the shop in the Switch’s main menu or download the app online from the Nintendo eShop.

  • The app will then be automatically installed on the Switch. You will need 162 megabytes of free space on your memory card for the installation.

  • Then open the app and log in with your Google account. You will also need to decide on a Nintendo account the first time you start the application.

  • Now the YouTube app is set up. You can watch all YouTube content on the Nintendo Switch, just don’t make any purchases.

  • If you want to purchase content, you can do so via the browser version, for example. You can then watch it on your Nintendo Switch.

YouTube: Using the app on the Nintendo Switch

YouTube can be used intuitively and effectively on the Nintendo handheld.

  • The application supports the maximum resolutions HD (720p) in handheld mode and Full HD (1080p) when you place the console in the docking station. The Switch Lite is limited to 720p.

  • In addition to the Joy-Cons and the Pro Controller, you can also use the touchscreen controls to operate the app. This allows you, for example, to click directly in the search bar and search for a video.

  • If you are using controllers, press the [X] button in the main menu of the app to open the search bar. While typing, use [B] to delete letters or numbers and use [Y] to insert a space.

  • Navigation within the app is easy using the cross control or the left analog stick. Special controls are available directly in the videos, for example, [CC] for subtitles.

  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection when using the app. This will prevent loading problems, especially when starting the application.

  • Important: A download function, as is available to YouTube Premium members, is not supported on Switch. The console’s screen recording function is also not available.
