Instagram: Switch to personal account – how to do it

by Corinna

On Instagram, you can switch to a personal account on your profile page. In just a few steps and without any special technical knowledge, you can change a previously public account to a private account.

How to switch to personal account on Instagram

On the Instagram platform, you can have both publicly viewable and private-only accounts. With the help of a few changes in the app’s settings, you can easily switch from a public account to a personal account.

  • First, open the Instagram app on your phone. Log in as usual with your login details. If you have several Instagram accounts, you should log in to the account that you would like to use as your personal account in the future. If you have several public accounts, you can carry out the following steps for all accounts in order to be able to continue to manage them as personal accounts.
  • Now access your profile page within the app by clicking on the person’s icon in the bottom right corner. If you have not yet downloaded the latest update of the Instagram app, the person’s icon may also be in the top right corner. On your profile page, you can not only upload your photos, videos and other information, but also make settings for your account.
  • To change your settings, click on the three horizontal lines located in the upper right corner and then select the menu item “Settings”. This is indicated by a small wheel symbol. Click on this menu item to open another page with several sections.
  • Scroll through the page and look for the menu item “Account”. Select this menu item. This will open a new page with more sections. On this page, scroll all the way down and tap “Switch back to personal account”. If a message box now appears on your screen, you must confirm the operation by clicking on the word “Confirm”.
  • If you have a company profile on Instagram, you must then confirm the deactivation of this account with Facebook. To do this, the Instagram app will automatically prompt you to the Facebook page if you have followed the previous steps. To deactivate, log in to the accessed Facebook page with your login details and thereby complete the process.

Notes to keep in mind when making your switch

You can easily switch from a public account to a private account yourself. However, you should follow a few important tips when making the switch.

  • If you switch to a personal account on Instagram, your Insights on Instagram will be automatically deleted. Insights are data that represent, among other things, the reach of your postings. Based on this data, you can create different strategies and content for your account and adapt them to your target group. If you only manage the public account as a private account in the future, you will no longer be able to access this data.
  • By having a private profile, only your followers will be able to see the content you upload on your Instagram account. Users who do not follow your account will therefore no longer be able to see your shared content. However, these users have the option to send you a request to follow your account. However, you must accept these requests first.
  • The switch from a public to a private account can also be reversed after the process. You can therefore make the switch as often as you like. This does not change after the first switch from a public to a personal account.
