You can set up Ecosia as your default search engine in just a few steps. This way you not only protect your data, but also the environment. Our instructions explain how to do this in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari on your PC or mobile phone.
Set up Ecosia as your default search engine: Google Chrome
Ecosia describes itself as a social enterprise. The search engine’s advertising revenue supports reforestation projects to counteract CO2 emissions. In addition, your data will not be sold to advertisers. With just a few clicks you can set Ecosia as your default search engine in Chrome:
- Open the settings via the three dots at the top right.
- On the left side, click on the tab “Search engine” and at the item “Search engine used in the address bar”, expand the menu and select Ecosia.
- If the search engine is not listed there, install the extension via the Chrome Web Store.
- Following the steps above, the search engine will appear if you click on “Manage search engine”.
- For Android / iPhone phones: In the Chrome app, access the settings by tapping the three dots in the bottom right corner. In the settings you then tap on “Search engine” and can set “Ecosia”.
Set Ecosia as your default search engine: Firefox
Similarly easy to set Ecosia as the default search engine in Firefox.
- To do this, call up the settings via the three indents at the top right.
- Then click on the “Search” tab. Here, Ecosia can be set as the default search engine under the menu item “Default search engine”.
- If the corresponding entry does not appear here, you can also download the extension here.
- On your mobile phone: Navigate to the settings in the top right-hand corner using the three dots. Click on “General” to go to the menu item “Search”. Under “Standard search engines” you can now select Ecosia.
Set Ecosia as your default search engine: Microsoft Edge
For Microsoft Edge, follow these steps to set it as your default search engine:
- Open the menu by clicking on the three horizontal dots in the top right-hand corner and select “Settings”.
- Click on the tab “Privacy, Search and Services” and scroll all the way down to the item “Address bar and search”.
- In “Search engine used in address bar”, set Ecosia here.
- An add-on is also provided here if Ecosia is not shown as an entry in the list.
Set up Ecosia as the default search engine: Safari
- Open Safari and click on “Safari” in the top right corner next to the Apple logo and then on “Preferences “
- On the iPhone / iPad you can easily set Ecosia by opening Safari in the settings. Under the menu item “Search”, tap on “Search Engine”. Here you can then choose between different options.
