If you create a Wikipedia entry, you are actively contributing to the online encyclopedia. To do that, you first have to read the tutorial pages.
This is how you create an entry on Wikipedia: these are the requirements
To create a Wikipedia entry, you should first create an account. After registering, you will find the item “Create new article” in the left menu bar. You can then create the entry on Wikipedia in several steps.
- Check title: To make sure that a second article on a topic has not already been created, you can use an integrated search window to check the title of your new entry. Perhaps you don’t need to create a new article at all, but just add to an existing one.
- Determining relevance: Wikipedia aims to be a good encyclopedia and, for example, wants to avoid advertising. That’s why your article should meet the relevance criteria. If you are unsure, you can use the Wikipedia relevance check to be sure.
- Set title: Choose a so-called lemma, the title of your Wikipedia entry. You should create the article in the “user namespace” and not in the “article namespace”. Otherwise, the article may be deleted before you even activate it.
- Write an entry: Now it’s your turn to write your Wikipedia entry.
- Publish the entry: When your Wikipedia article is finished and you want to publish it, you just have to click on “Save article”
- Delete and release: Your new entry will now end up in the “entry control”, where experienced Wikipedia users can edit it or suggest it for deletion. However, you can also adapt the article accordingly before deletion.
Cost of a Wikipedia entry
A Wikipedia article usually doesn’t cost anything. What is important is to write a good article – preferably not about yourself.
- Generally, creating a Wikipedia entry is free for all users. It becomes subject to a fee for individuals or companies when they hire an agency to create a Wikipedia entry.
- In principle, it is not forbidden to write a Wikipedia entry about yourself. Nevertheless, it is not advisable for individuals or companies to write about themselves. This contradicts the principle of a neutral point of view.
- A good Wikipedia article is therefore not written by yourself. It also involves extensive preparatory work and research.
- When writing, make sure that you express yourself simply and understandably. The entries are intended for laymen and not for specialists.
- Wikipedia articles follow a consistent structure with general information at the beginning and chapters marked by headings and paragraphs.
